However, the HwH fieldwork data can only be viewed as
secondary data due to the translator’s interpretation of
participant’s responses to the questionnaire. When
carrying out this type of fieldwork reflection becomes an
instinctive element. “The distinctiveness of small business
research is nowhere more apparent than in the fieldwork
stage.”

The richness of Shila KC, Ramchandra KC and I finding our
way in the above setting has been sourced from my journal.
‘Interesting what you learn. At first Shila was unsure about her translation but I reassured her,
that as a team, we would be fine, which is what we did. We soon found our rhythm and
Ramchandra’s reminders of, ‘now do you understand mam whilst we were talking or travelling on
his motorbike was enchanting.’

I have noted in my journal that Ramchandra KC has been involved with HwH over the last eight
years and Shila KC five years. The following was shared by Ramchandra KC during one of our
many conversations. ‘Social mobilization – mobilizing in societies – working in societies with poor
and local people – behaving appropriately – treating people the same. We should not be the
superior one (You have learnt this – how to move within the community). Our role is to mobilize
these people out of poverty.’
Following are the questions and responses given to the microfinance fieldwork questionnaire.
Reflections, observations and comments appearing in italics have been sourced from my
personal fieldwork journals.
