There was clear evidence of partnerships in operation with this small group study. Early micro
loans in village areas in Bangladesh — where the institution of microfinance was developed for
women — indicated that the support of husbands and family was not necessarily evident due to
cultural practices. There are clear contrasts in the developing world when consideration is given
to the question on social impacts of micro credit. Each cultural context has its own cultural belief
systems to navigate around which brings into view the importance of cooperative group loans to
rural women.
In Bangladesh, “Men have a significant interest in ensuring the appropriate behaviour of women,
since “inappropriate” behaviour is often perceived as a man’s failure to provide for his family”
and such cultural beliefs “…effect how women’s earning are regard.” For a rural woman in
Bangladesh these cultural beliefs mean, “…that women often must violate the norms of
appropriate behaviour to ensure the survival of their families.”

On the other hand, the
experiences of women accessing microcredit in a Nepalese context are assisted in their
endeavours by family members.
