When I took this fieldwork photo below I had no idea of its significance until I started to write up
this report.
Village Carpet Weaver
After exchanging views with Kira about the writing up of this
report I discussed my intentions and reasoning behind the
additional ‘shared experiences’ section in this report. I
mentioned that my endeavours with this report are not
dissimilar to those of a carpet weaver.
The poignancy of this comment made me reflect upon the
woman I met in figure 5 who was employed by a village
business woman who had accessed SNUsacc loans. I was
taken with watching her fingers working the colours of wool
and threading them through the loom to create the pattern
provided by her employer.
Through translation I asked how long will it take her to
complete this carpet and was told approximately 21 days. I then inquired to Shila KC if I was able
to purchase this particular carpet due to the significance of our meeting. We then revisited her
employer to check if that could be arranged. I was later informed that during the carpets
production the craftswoman became un-well so earlier arrangements for collection in
Kathmandu needed to be changed and the carpet was transported back to Australia on
completion.
Just like the above craftswoman, I too needed to create a structure for this report just like her
loom and determine the components, texture, materials and colours required. One that would
enable me to tease out the richness that sits within qualitative data including translated
material.
